Tylön stands as southern Halland's only island, a verdant 14-hectare gem separated from the mainland by a broad sound, just 500 meters from Tyludden near Tylösand. Covered predominantly in ljung- and gräshed—heather and grass heath—the terrain supports strandängar meadows and fosters exceptional biodiversity. This Natura 2000 area, protected since 1927, safeguards a rich avian population including eider colonies, herring gulls, lesser black-backed gulls, common tern, scaup, long-tailed duck, purple sandpiper, and shore pipit. Over a century of meticulous bird inventories documents dramatic shifts, from 1,000 eider pairs in 1975 sustained by abundant mussels, to recent establishments of greylag and white-fronted geese.

Dominating the skyline is Tylön's stately lighthouse, engineered by Nils Gustav von Heidenstam and erected in 1870 as a clad iron framework variant of his signature design. Accompanied by fyrvaktarbostäder—keeper's residences—designed by L.F. Lindberg, the station included cellars, outbuildings, a privy, well, and even livestock like geese, sheep, pigs, chickens, and cows. An oxelallé rowan avenue leads from the buildings to the sea, unique among fyrplatser. Operational until 1968, it was succeeded by the offshore Tylögrund light, yet endures as a daymark atop Bronze Age rösen cairns that served ancient seafarers.

Prehistoric echoes resonate through four prominent Bronze Age burial mounds crowning the island's heights, engineered for maritime visibility. Most intriguing is Tylajungfrun, a phallic standing stone potentially a pagan fertility symbol, evoking rituals lost to time. In the 1700s, the crown leased Tylön to båtsmän—naval conscripts—for fishing to support the fleet, a practice abandoned by century's end. These layers weave human history into the island's natural tapestry.

Tylön's rhythms are dictated by nature: landfall and stay are prohibited across most of the island and waters within 150 meters of shore from April 1 to July 15, preserving nesting sites. Exceptions permit access via the eastern brygga dock and fenced beach area, plus adjacent waters toward Tylösand. Reserve rules ban damaging flora or fauna, camping, fires, free-roaming pets, littering, and vegetation picking, ensuring the site's low-impact perpetuity under Länsstyrelsen management and Statens fastighetsverk ownership.

Approach reveals a lush, unusually green fyrplats contrasting Bohuslän's barren holms, with heath blooms in summer, wave-lapped shores, and bird calls filling the air. The lighthouse gleams against Kattegat horizons, while meadows sway in coastal breezes. Though boat access limits exploration, permitted zones offer intimate encounters with heath fragrance, gull cries, and sea vistas toward Tylösand's famed strand.
