Renzo Piano's Architectural Vision

Vandalorum's buildings evoke the memory of a monumental red hay-drying barn that once dominated this site between Värnamo's fields. Italian architect Renzo Piano, known for masterpieces like the Centre Pompidou, reimagined it as eleven interconnected barns arranged in a ring. This design fosters a natural flow for visitors, enclosing a protective courtyard ideal for contemplation and events. The clean lines and expansive spaces harmonize with the surrounding Småland landscape, blending modern innovation with regional heritage.

Dynamic Exhibitions and Art Archive

The museum hosts rotating displays of influential contemporary art and design from Swedish and global creators. Themes span innovative installations, textiles, and patterns, often linking to workshops in the Form Studio. Adjacent, the Småland Art Archive—established in 1964—preserves works by artists connected to the region from the 1920s onward. Housed in one barn, it mounts five self-produced shows yearly, highlighting local ties and creative evolution in Småland.

Piet Oudolf's Perennial Paradise

Piet Oudolf, the renowned Dutch garden designer behind New York's High Line, crafted Vandalorum's 3,500 m² perennial meadow—his first at a Nordic cultural site. This all-season garden bursts with textured plantings that shift from spring vibrancy to autumn drama, inviting quiet exploration. Pathways weave through swaying grasses and blooms, offering sensory immersion that complements the indoor galleries and underscores design's role in nature.

Culinary and Retail Delights

Vandalorum's award-winning restaurant anchors the experience, serving seasonal dishes baked in its own oven. Lunch specials feature local ingredients like fresh bread and potatoes, with à la carte options and half-price children's portions including pancakes. The shop curates pieces from Sweden's top designers—objects, books, and exclusives—supporting the museum's mission. These spaces transform a visit into a full sensory journey.

Creative Hub and Origins

Initiated by entrepreneur Sven Lundh in 1984, inspired by a childhood encounter with artist Sven Ljungberg, Vandalorum embodies Småland's design legacy. Lundh's furniture firm Källemo championed idea-driven production, paving the way for this cultural center. Named by museum pioneer Pontus Hultén after ancient Vandals possibly linked to the region, it continues as a foundation-backed space promoting art's transformative power.
