Stora Kyrkan

4.4 (212)

Östersund's 1940 basilica masterpiece: Wahlman's airy brick temple with Linnqvist's vast fresco altarpiece and Jämtland's Christian saga carved in granite.

Stora Kyrkan, Östersund's grand parish church, was completed in 1940 as a bold replacement for the aging old structure. Designed by architect Lars Israel Wahlman, this monumental brick basilica harmonizes with the Jämtland landscape through its airy volumes and local motifs. Inside, a massive 170-square-meter fresco altarpiece by Hilding Linnqvist depicts Christ's parables with naive vibrancy, blending biblical scenes with regional costumes. The main portal features a granite frieze by Olof Ahlberg illustrating Jämtland's Christianization, from Olav the Holy to Östmund Gudfastson. A rya tapestry from Frösön clinics and a Storsjöhyttan baptismal font add unique touches. Open weekdays and Sundays, it offers serene contemplation amid city views toward Lake Storsjön.

Discover more about Stora Kyrkan

Monumental Birth in 1940

Stora Kyrkan emerged as Östersund's ambitious response to a growing congregation, replacing the cramped 19th-century predecessor. Construction spanned 1938 to 1940 under architect Lars Israel Wahlman, who envisioned a distinctly Jämtland-inspired temple. On July 14, 1940, Bishop Torsten Bohlin consecrated the church, marking it as Sweden's last grand ecclesiastical build before modernism's full rise. Positioned on an open site, it commands views over Lake Storsjön and Oviksfjällen, its robust form anchoring the cityscape.Wahlman's design rejected imitation of ancient styles, favoring large, light-filled spaces attuned to local character. Handmade bricks form the basilica structure, with a granite base and prominent west tower topped by a copper-clad spire. Side aisles feature tall, pointed-arch windows, while low side entrances flank the main west portal and east chancel.

Portal of Jämtland's Christian Past

The grand main entrance captivates with a granite frieze sculpted by Olof Ahlberg, narrating Jämtland's conversion to Christianity. Figures include King Olav the Holy, Olof Skötkonung, the mythical Arnljot Gellinger, and Östmund Gudfastson, whose Frösön runestone claims the region's baptism. This Brunflo-born artist's work sets a regional tone, embedding local history into the sacred threshold.Traditional symbols sparingly adorn the interior, shifting to textiles for crosses and chalices. The space evokes Swedish-Norwegian narratives, prioritizing openness over ornamentation.

Fresco Masterpiece by Linnqvist

Dominating the chancel, Hilding Linnqvist's altarpiece spans 170 square meters—Östersund's largest artwork and Sweden's biggest fresco at completion. Painted al fresco from 1939 to 1940, it illustrates Christ's gospel parables through the artist's naive style, mixing eras and locales. A virgin in Jämtland folk dress exemplifies this fusion, bringing biblical tales vividly into the Nordic context.Linnqvist, a leading naive artist, layered motifs with dreamlike immediacy, inviting contemplation of timeless lessons amid modern architecture.

Crafted Details and Local Artistry

A rya tapestry from 1936, woven by women at Frösön clinics, hangs on the south wall, its woolen warmth contrasting brick austerity. The baptismal font, designed by Sune Overud with a glass bowl from Storsjöhyttan, embodies local craftsmanship. These elements underscore Stora Kyrkan's roots in community labor and regional materials. The interior's restraint amplifies these focal pieces, fostering quiet reflection beneath high vaults.

Beacon of Serenity and Culture

Today, Stora Kyrkan welcomes visitors for stillness, candle-lighting, or art appreciation. Its unique profile—no other Jämtland church matches Wahlman's vision—blends 1910s-20s influences with emerging modernism. Elevated above the town, it symbolizes enduring faith amid evolving times.
