Målarmusslan stands beside Stångån as an intentionally scaled-up mussel shell that ties the city to its river. The work’s form echoes the freshwater mussels historically present in the stream and makes a quiet civic statement about species, place and riverine continuity. Placed near the Stångebro bridge, the piece reads both from the city side and from the water, acting as a marker that frames the riverbank rather than dominating it.

Created by the Swedish artist duo Bigert & Bergström, the sculpture draws on their long interest in weather, environment and the human relationship to nature. The mussel motif is literal and poetic: mussel shells accrete layers over time and therefore carry traces of past environmental conditions, an idea the artists use to suggest both memory and climate archive. The work continues the duo’s practice of using large-scale, accessible public pieces to open conversations about ecology in urban settings.

Målarmusslan’s surface and construction are arranged to catch daylight and artificial illumination in different ways; at close range you notice reflective laminas and clean structural seams while from a distance the form reads as a unified luminous curve. After dusk the artwork can be lit to create changing moods along the riverfront; during daytime its polished surfaces pick up sky and vegetation, integrating the sculpture with seasonal colour and weather.

The site near Stångebro is a natural meeting point for walkers and cyclists and functions as the official starting spot for the Stångårundan riverside loop. The placement was chosen to link a cultural gesture with a recreational route, so the mussel becomes a wayfinding and gathering object as much as an artwork—visible from approaching paths and from the bridge’s vantage points.

Målarmusslan intentionally references the red‑listed freshwater mussel species that inhabit Stångån and the role of shell-bearing animals as quiet recorders of environmental change. Its presence is a reminder of urban waterways’ layered histories: industrial, recreational and biological. For local residents the sculpture provides a new focal point for everyday encounters with the river—dog walks, morning runs and slow summer evenings all unfold around it.

Approach close to the sculpture and the tactile scale becomes apparent—large enough to be monumentally readable yet approachable for inspection; light shifts across its surfaces as clouds pass and seasons change. In spring and summer the riverside planting frames the work; in low light months the illuminated shell cuts a bright silhouette against darker bankside trees. The piece is designed to be appreciated in passing or savoured as a restful stop on a longer riverside circuit.
