Ekeby Wetlands Travel Guide

Ekeby Wetlands is Sweden’s sizeable constructed wetland tucked along the Eskilstuna River on the town’s outskirts. Designed to slow and filter river water and to create varied wetland habitats, the site combines shallow open pools, reedbeds, willow fringes and damp meadows; this patchwork supports aquatic plants, emergent vegetation and a rich invertebrate fauna that in turn sustains a thriving bird community.

The wetland’s value is in its changing moods through the year: in spring the reed fringes fill with warblers and breeding ducks, early summer brings grebes and herons, while autumn is notable for passage migrants and gatherings of dabbling ducks. Expect to see mute swans, mallards, gadwall and occasionally grebes along with smaller waders and songbirds that exploit the edge habitats. Migrant peaks and breeding behaviour provide the most dynamic wildlife displays.

Close to the water you’ll notice a hush broken by reed rustle, occasional wingbeats and high, plaintive calls; the air holds a green, earthy scent after rain and in warm months the surface shimmers with dragonflies. Low boardwalks and viewing clearings bring you close to the ripple of water and reed stems, while open meadows beyond the marsh allow long sightlines for scanning the pools and sky.

Although not an untouched bog, Ekeby’s constructed character is part of its interest: engineered shallow basins and willow planting were introduced to create habitat complexity and to improve water quality downstream. That human shaping has created a space that serves both nature and the local community — an accessible wildlife refuge that also functions in flood mitigation and biodiversity enhancement.

Trails and small observation points make the wetland easy to experience at a slow pace; binoculars and a field guide will repay close attention. The atmosphere is generally tranquil, with breaks in quiet provided by bird calls and distant traffic. Seasonal changes alter the palette — brilliant greens in late spring, insect-bright summer, and a more spare, reed-gold late autumn — each offering different photographic and wildlife-watching opportunities.

Set just outside Eskilstuna proper, Ekeby Wetlands links urban green space with regional nature reserves. It’s part of a broader network of parks and waterways that shape local recreation and ecological planning. The wetland stands as an example of how modest engineering, sensitive planting and ongoing management can create a productive habitat within a partly urbanised landscape.
