Fjätfallen Travel Guide

Fjätfallen sits where the Fjätälven carves through ancient forest, dropping in a sequence of chutes and ledges that create two distinct waterfalls often called the Big and Little Fjätfallet. The surrounding woodland is a typical Dalarna mix of tall spruce, silver birch and mossy undergrowth, and the soundscape is dominated by rushing water and bird song. In spring and early summer the falls swell with meltwater; in late summer flows are calmer but still dramatic.

At the main viewpoint you get a wide vista of the larger fall — multiple drops framed by rock ribs and lichen-coated boulders — while a separate path leads toward the smaller fall and a suspension bridge that crosses the river. Simple infrastructure such as waymarked trails, a lean-to (shelter) near the water and a few wooden bridges help visitors explore without disturbing fragile shoreline. The trails vary from level boardwalk sections to steeper, rooty stretches that demand sturdy footwear.

Spring thaws produce thunderous flow, spray that cools the air and a floral understorey breaking into bloom. Summer brings warm light through the canopy and good conditions for picnics at the lean-to; autumn sets the forest alight with golds and rusts against the dark water; winter freezes parts of the cascade into delicate ice forms and muffles sound under fresh snow. The site’s microclimate near the gorge is noticeably cooler and more humid than open clearings, so layers are useful year-round.

Birds — including woodland species and those attracted to fast water — are common around the river corridor; look and listen for tits, woodpeckers and wagtails. The forest floor supports a rich carpet of mosses, and closer to the water you’ll find moisture-loving ferns and liverworts clinging to damp rocks. Signs of elk and deer may be encountered on quieter trails, and small mammals inhabit the tangle of fallen logs and shrub patches.

Fjätfallen has long been part of the local landscape used by foresters, fishers and recreational visitors from nearby mountain hamlets. The river and adjacent land bore traces of traditional timber work, and simple shelters and trails reflect a Scandinavian outdoors culture focused on low-impact enjoyment — fika stops, short hikes and nature study rather than heavy infrastructure. The place retains a lived-in, uncommercial character that emphasises natural drama over amenities.

Expect a mix of easy viewing platforms and more challenging path sections; bring good footwear, a waterproof layer and water-resistant protection for cameras if you plan to get close to spray. The lean-to provides a sheltered spot for lunch and offers classic vistas over the falls, while the loop trails let you combine both falls into a single walk. The mood here is elemental: rock, water and forest combine to create short but memorable encounters with wild northern rivers.
