The Flight Museum F 21 traces its roots to 1941, when Norrbottens Flygbaskår was established at Kallax airfield following a devastating forest fire that cleared the land. Initially a base for southern Swedish squadrons rotating north, it equipped with light liaison planes and the Red Cross air ambulance, marking early aviation efforts in subarctic conditions. Pioneers like Gösta von Porat shaped its command, laying foundations for reconnaissance dominance in upper Norrland.

Post-World War II, F 21 evolved rapidly. By 1949, its first reconnaissance squadron formed with S14, S26, and S18 aircraft, complemented by a photo unit. The jet age dawned in the 1950s with S29C Spaningstunnan replacing older models, while J28B/C trainers prepared pilots. In 1963, it became Kungliga Norrbottens Flygflottilj, adding a fighter squadron with J32B Jaktlansen and introducing Sweden's first helicopter, HKP3.

The 1960s and 1970s saw F 21's unique three-squadron structure: reconnaissance with S35E Draken, fighters with J35 Draken, and light attack units. By 1979, JA37 Viggen fighters arrived, with all divisions standardized on FPL37 by 1985. Extensive conversions to AJS37 multi-role configurations at the on-site workshop highlighted F 21's engineering prowess, culminating in 1996. The main runway extended to 3350 meters, Scandinavia's longest rollway.

Today, F 21 remains one of Sweden's four active wings, operating JAS 39 Gripen multirole fighters from Luleå, with sidetaches in Jokkmokk and Vidsel. It boasts one of the world's largest training areas, hosting Swedish and international forces. Core missions include air surveillance shared with other wings, rapid deployment readiness, and subarctic MEDEVAC via NH90 helicopters. In 2014, King Carl XVI Gustaf presented a new regimental color, incorporating Luleå's crossed keys and heritage from disbanded wings.

Housed near the guard post at the active base, the museum showcases aviation artifacts from regional fly pioneers like Ernst Fogman and early flights over Sarek National Park. Exhibits cover Sweden's first regular air route from Porjus to Suorva, historic hangars at Bodträsk, and gifts like Eric von Rosen's Thulin D to Finland in 1918. Personal stories, such as Florman's snowy 1916 escapade, bring the subarctic flying challenges to life amid models, photos, and equipment.
