In the early 17th century, Arvidsjaur became a focal point for Sámi gatherings when Protestant missionaries established the first church in 1607. Church attendance laws, enforced by the Swedish monarchy, required nomadic Sámi to travel long distances for services. To accommodate these visits, they constructed simple wooden cottages called gåhties—compact squares topped with steep, pyramid-shaped roofs designed to shed heavy snow. These structures formed Lappstaden, the oldest and best-preserved parish village of its kind from the 1700s.

The 80 surviving huts showcase the ingenuity of Forest Sámi, who sourced timber from surrounding woods. Each gåhtie features sturdy log walls and a turf-covered roof that insulates against Arctic winters. Clustered together, they created a self-contained village where families stayed during religious festivals and markets. Though nestled beside modern buildings today, their rustic forms evoke the resilience of a people adapted to Lapland's harsh climate.

For centuries, Arvidsjaur served as a trading and debating hub for regional Sámi, drawing them from vast forest territories. Lappstaden buzzed with activity during church seasons, blending spiritual obligations with cultural exchange. Silver discoveries nearby boosted the town's growth as a supply depot, intertwining Sámi traditions with Swedish settlement. Preservation efforts, led by local educator Karin Stenberg, ensured these huts endured as a cultural anchor.

The site pulses with life during Storstämningshelgen, the last weekend of August, when descendants revive old customs in the very huts their ancestors built. Music, storytelling, and handicrafts fill the air, echoing the markets of yore. Outside festival times, the quiet village invites contemplation of Sámi heritage amid whispering pines and distant reindeer trails.
