Sandängesstranden unfolds as a sweeping coastal haven, where fine-grained sands stretch along the shores of Bondöfjärden, inviting barefoot strolls and contemplative gazes toward the horizon. The soft, undulating fly sand dunes, sculpted by wind and waves, create a dynamic landscape that shifts subtly with each season, offering a tactile playground for exploration. Rich Biodiversity in the Sand

Beneath the sun-warmed surface lies a hidden world of specialized species. The predatory forest sand hunter and gray ant thrive in the loose grains, while the large sand spider weaves its webs among the dunes. At the edges, Bottenviken wormwood—a plant found nowhere else on Earth—flourishes alongside peculiar fungi like hedgehog fungus and the toxic yet rare sand root truffle. Birds such as the stonechat and dunlin nest here, their calls punctuating the whisper of wind over sand, revealing the reserve's role as a vital habitat in the Bothnian Gulf ecosystem.

Ancient Pines and Geological Legacy

Towering 250-year-old pines stand as sentinels, remnants of the vast Pitholmsheden forest that once extended to the sea. These trees bear witness to dramatic geological history: rolling strandvales, parallel ridges formed by post-glacial rebound and ancient shorelines, weave through the pinewoods, telling tales of a time when the Bothnian Sea reached far inland. The interplay of open heath, dune systems, and forested ridges creates a mosaic of microhabitats, each layer revealing the slow sculpting of ice age aftermath.

Leafy Forests and Avian Symphony

Transitioning from beach to interior, the reserve harbors fine leafy natural forests rich with old and dead trees, prime for woodpeckers. The rhythmic drumming of the lesser spotted woodpecker echoes through the canopy, joined by other forest dwellers. These areas contrast the exposed sands, providing shaded refuges where light filters through branches, casting patterns on mossy floors and fostering a sense of timeless woodland seclusion amid the coastal expanse.

Archipelago Vistas and Island Silhouettes

From the open sands, the eye is drawn seaward to islands like Hällskär, Stor-Sandskär, Stenskär, Jävreholmen, Tallskär, and Huvan, part of the adjacent Bondöfjärdens nature reserve. These silhouettes against the water, framed by the mighty Pite River esker, offer unobstructed panoramas that shift with light and tide. The reserve's position along the esker—a glacial ridge—enhances these views, connecting land and sea in a visual symphony of natural forms.

Protected Haven for Recreation

Designated in 2011 by Piteå municipality, the 2.7 km² reserve (1.2 km² land) safeguards this unique blend of coastal, dune, and forest ecosystems. Health trails wind through the area, promoting mindful walks while respecting rules like leashed dogs outside May 15–September 15 and no motorized vehicles off roads.
