Tiveden National Park sprawls across 2,030 hectares of rugged wilderness straddling Västra Götaland and Örebro counties, between Sweden's vast lakes Vänern and Vättern. Stenkällerundan (2.2 km, 2 hours), the park's most popular path, scrambles over giant boulders to Stenkälla cave and viewpoints overlooking Lake Vättern. Longer routes like Oxögabergsrundan (6.7 km, 4.5 hours) traverse marshy valleys, capercaillie forests, and barren rock slabs.

Legendary Landmarks and Hidden Gems

Myth-infused sites dot the park: Trollkyrka, the 'Trolls' Church,' looms as a rocky sanctuary tied to folklore of forest trolls. Stigmanspasset marks a dramatic rift valley gateway, while Junker Jägare’s rock stands as a massive sentinel. Caves, crevices, and small pools punctuate boulder fields. Vitsand beach on Lake Trehörningen provides a sandy shore for dips in clear waters, contrasting the inland wilds. Tärnekullerundan (1.3 km) reveals damp spruce groves, caves, and sun-warmed lichen plateaus near swimming spots.

Wildlife and Wilderness Preservation

As a protected area managed to revert to primeval forest, fallen trees lie undisturbed, fostering biodiversity. Expect blueberries in summer, capercaillie in conifer stands, and elusive moose amid the undergrowth. The park's compact size belies its sense of isolation, drawing 100,000 visitors yearly for its raw, untamed feel. Rules emphasize leave-no-trace: no fires outside designated spots, limited camping, and paths only to preserve the fragile ecosystem.
