Beijershamn’s story begins with ambition and error: in the mid‑1800s a sweeping, two‑kilometre stone pier was built to create a harbour, but the structure proved ill suited to local currents and gradually silted up. The abandoned harbour works, their exposed shoals and newly formed lagoons became the raw material for a rich coastal ecosystem — the hard engineering quietly remade into tidal flats, reedbeds and shallow bays that attract birdlife throughout the year.

The reserve is a mosaic of salt‑meadow, brackish pools, reed belts, scattered groves and rocky skerries. Low, grazed strandängar (salt marshes) lie behind a gently shelving shore, while long shallow bays reveal mud and sand at low tide. A prominent curved pier and a series of raised paths and boardwalks lead out over the wetlands to bird towers and viewing platforms; from these vantage points you’ll get broad views across Kalmarsund and detailed sightings of waders, terns and dabbling ducks in the shoals.

Beijershamn is valued for both breeding and migrant birds: spring and autumn migration bring concentrated passage, while summer hosts breeding waders and terns. The mix of open water, mudflats and grazed meadows supports species that favour shallow foraging areas. Habitat management — periodic clearing and grazing — has been central to maintaining the open character that keeps the site attractive to ground‑nesting and feeding birds.

Marked trails circle through the reserve and include an accessible loop that follows hardened surfaces and boardwalks out to the pier and southern observation tower. The main route affords layered views: foreground reedbeds, midground pools and the wide marine corridor beyond. Smaller paths thread nearer the shore for closer study of saltmarsh plants, small invertebrates and shorebirds probing the foreshore.

Remnants of the ambitious harbour project remain legible in the landscape: the arc of the pier, quarried stone and traces of early works speak of a past plan reshaped by nature. Local placenames and small historical markers recall the 19th‑century effort, while later conservation work — clearing alder scrub and reintroducing grazing — tells the more recent story of people actively managing the place for wildlife and open views.

Beijershamn is exposed and elemental: wind, salt air and the lap of shallow waves are constant companions. On calm days the water mirrors sky, while on blustery afternoons the pier becomes a wind corridor with sharp, briny gusts. The reserve’s flat, open profile makes its light and weather changeable, rewarding early and late light with long shadows, low sun across the mudflats and striking silhouettes of birds on posts and rocks.
