Gråborg and Borgs by, Öland

An imposing ringfort with layered pasts

Gråborg began as a substantial fortification in the Iron Age and was adapted and re-used across the centuries; its long ringwall — originally more than 600 metres around — encloses a broad elliptical interior whose function shifted as political and economic conditions changed. The surviving western, vaulted gate is a rare medieval survival on Öland and marks a later phase when the earthwork was reinforced in stone and served administrative and defensive purposes during the Middle Ages.
