Bokö Nature Reserve comprises Bokö and a cluster of small islands and skerries where rocky shores meet shallow bays and reed-fringed inlets. The terrain alternates between sheltered, low rocky outcrops, narrow beaches and former grazing lands reclaimed from the sea; this patchwork creates a variety of microhabitats from sunny headlands to reed beds and eelgrass-rich shallows.

The reserve protects coastal meadows, scattered old oaks and littoral vegetation that support breeding and foraging birds alongside rich shallow-water plant life. Eelgrass and vegetated seabeds in the area act as nursery grounds for pike, perch and other coastal fish while the rocky skerries offer resting and feeding spots for seabirds. Seasonal shifts—spring tides, reed growth and late-summer drying of meadows—shape the visible character of the reserve.

You can still sense human presence in the landscape: traces of small-scale farming, pasture lines and field remnants are woven into the habitat. Historically the island’s livelihoods combined fishing, pilotage and subsistence farming; the open meadows and hazel scrubs that remain are the result of long-standing grazing and land use practices that helped create the reserve’s current biodiversity.

The overall mood at Bokö is intimate and contemplative rather than dramatic; wind-swept grasses, the creak of low branches, and the rhythmic lapping of water set the pace. Trails and shoreline ledges reveal close-up encounters with lichen-speckled rock, salt-tolerant wildflowers and the occasional grazing sheep preserved as part of conservation grazing regimes that maintain open meadow habitats.

Birdlife is a prominent feature: waders and terns use shallow bays and skerries for feeding, while coastal raptors patrol the archipelago. In spring the reserve swells with migratory movement and nesting activity; in late summer the eelgrass beds and shallow bays support juvenile fish. Winter exposes the bare architectural lines of the islands and emphasizes their geological bones.

Walking here means shifting between firm rocky slabs, soft meadow turf and pebbled strandlines. Salt-scented air and the bright, crystalline light of northern latitudes make colours—grey rock, gold grass, and blue-green sea—seem intensified. The reserve’s scale invites slow exploration: quiet coves, narrow forest patches and open pastures unfold in a series of small, memorable scenes.
