The types shown — representatives from the postwar jet era — recall the decades when local factories and the nearby Malmslätt airbase produced military and civil types that became part of Sweden’s defence and industrial identity. The mounts, placards and the scale of the pylons convert engineering objects into civic sculpture.

Up close, the planes’ metal skins show the angular lines of Cold War design: high-mounted intakes, delta and cropped-delta wings, and sharply raked tails. Weathering varies by element and season; rain brings a muted sheen to the aluminium, winter light cuts hard edges, and summer low sun paints long, dramatic shadows across the grass and tarmac below.

The site’s soundscape is a mixed one: traffic hum on the E4 forms a constant backdrop, interrupted now and then by distant aircraft over Malmslätt or the airport. On a breezy afternoon you feel the pylons’ presence more than hear them — a quiet, windswept memorial rather than a noisy attraction. Its location near major roads was chosen so the display announces the region’s aeronautical identity to commuters and visitors alike, forming part of an extended public story about local engineering and flight.

This is an outdoor, public artwork rather than an indoor museum: viewing is informal and usually brief. The arrangement is designed for photographs at different angles — profiles against the sky, foreshortened close-ups from viewing points and long exposures at dusk. Lighting is functional rather than theatrical, so early-morning or late-afternoon light typically offers the most textured views. The site’s layout invites a short, contemplative stop rather than a long visit.
