Tinnerö eklandskap is defined by its extensive oak pastures and long-lived hollow oaks that form a living archive of traditional land use. The reserve’s open, gently undulating fields were created and maintained by centuries of grazing; those same practices continue today, with cattle and sheep kept in many of the larger enclosures to preserve the low, species-rich grassland that supports rare lichens, fungi and invertebrates.

Interspersed with the grazing lands are reed-fringed ponds, restored marshes and Rosenkällasjön, which together host a strong seasonal chorus of waterfowl and marsh birds. Scattered bird hides, viewing platforms and a wheelchair-accessible jetty give close, low-impact observation opportunities; in spring the reedbeds and shallow edges are particularly lively with migrants and breeding waterbirds.

The reserve contains a surprising depth of archaeological features: ancient field systems, remnants of enclosure fences and a long stone causeway north-east of Tinnerö gård that reflects centuries of human use. These cultural traces sit comfortably among the natural features, reminding visitors that the landscape is a cultural–ecological whole rather than a wilderness removed from people.

A clear system of gravel tracks and smaller footpaths winds through the reserve and links picnic clearings, marked barbecue sites and small viewpoints such as Rödberget. Several of the larger rest areas provide fire-equipped grills and benches; accessible facilities have been provided at selected spots to widen public access while concentrating visitor impacts on durable surfaces.

Each season reshapes Tinnerö’s character: spring brings a carpet of meadow flowers and dawn song; summer fills the pastures with grazing animals and insects; autumn turns the veteran oaks luminous; and winter exposes the skeletal form of the trees and the broad horizons. More than 360 red-listed species have been recorded, and the reserve supports important bat populations, occasional otter sightings and specialist oak-associated invertebrates.

The reserve is actively managed to balance grazing, conservation and public access. Regulations restrict camping to designated shelters, require dogs to be leashed during grazing season, and limit open fires to marked fire sites; these rules help maintain habitat quality and protect sensitive plants and fauna. Interpretive signs and information boards at parking and entry points explain the reserve’s rules and its long natural and cultural history.
