Rottneros Park emerged from tragedy and vision in 1932, when miller Svante Påhlson began transforming the estate after a devastating fire razed the original manor house on Saint Lucy's Eve in 1929. Drawing inspiration from Selma Lagerlöf's *Gösta Berling's Saga*, where the estate embodies the fictional Ekeby, Påhlson crafted a new manor reflecting the novel's grandeur. This private residence anchors the park's classical layout, with intersecting north-south and east-west axes guiding visitors through harmonious landscapes west of Lake Fryken.

Over 100 sculptures dot the 22 hectares, creating an ever-evolving outdoor gallery without a rigid master plan. Works by artists like Carl Milles, including the Orpheus group in Milles Square, mingle with statues of Lagerlöf herself and mythic figures like Resting Hermes.
