A castle born as a gift

Teleborgs slott is a deliberately romantic creation from the turn of the 20th century, erected as a morning‑gift by Count Fredrik Bonde for his young wife, Anna Koskull. Construction ran in the late 1890s and the finished building—modelled on German and Rhineland medieval castles—was completed around 1900. Its silhouette of square and round towers, steep roofs and masonry cladding was designed to evoke older fortifications while functioning as an elegant private residence.

Architectural details and setting

The castle stands on a rocky projection by Lake Trummen and uses contrasting red brick and grey granite to dramatic effect. It was drawn by the Malmö firm of Lindvall & Boklund and contains three main storeys, a prominent square keep and a smaller rounded tower, plus richly decorated interior ceilings and period fittings in many rooms. Paths and parkland slope away from the building to the lakeside, giving the castle a staged, cinematic approach when viewed from the water or the grounds.

Lives lived within the walls

Teleborg’s history traces several distinct chapters: aristocratic summer residence, a private girls’ boarding school and later a succession of owners before municipal purchase in the 1960s. Over the decades the castle’s rooms have been adapted for new uses while preserving many original decorative details and the sense of an inhabited house, where domestic scale meets ceremonial rooms and a handful of suites named after episodes in the building’s past.

A modern hospitality hub

Today the castle operates as a hotel, restaurant and conference centre. Historic reception rooms serve as dining and meeting spaces, and additional accommodation has been created in the castle and neighbouring gatehouses. The converted brewhouse and other annexes broaden the site’s offerings, providing flexible spaces for private functions such as weddings, banquets and corporate events while maintaining the building’s period character.

Landscape, leisure and seasonal life

The lakeside position shapes much of Teleborg’s atmosphere: shoreline paths, views across Trummen and a small park planted during the 20th century frame the castle. In clear weather the building’s reflection on the water and the long light of Swedish summer make it especially picturesque; in winter its brick and granite silhouette stands out against low, pale skies. The site sits close to Växjö’s university precinct and leafy suburbs, giving it a semi‑urban yet distinctly leafy character.

Visitors notice the castle’s theatrical composition—the towers, the carved stone details and the interplay of materials—and the intimacy of many rooms that retain period charm even as they serve contemporary hospitality needs. The restaurant occupies one of the grand interior spaces, where vaulted ceilings and decorative finishes create a setting for seasonal regional cuisine and celebratory meals. The ensemble of main building, gatehouses and parkland offers layers of experience, from close inspection of masonry and ornament to relaxed lakeside promenades.
