Junibacken was conceived as a living homage to Swedish children’s literature and opened in the mid-1990s through the initiative of writers and cultural patrons who wanted a place where stories were not just read but inhabited. The building and exhibitions channel a distinctly narrative approach: sets and rooms are arranged like pages in a book, and familiar characters appear in life-size environments that invite exploration rather than passive observation.

At the centre of Junibacken is the Story Train, a gently moving miniature railway that winds through tableaux and scenes from beloved Scandinavian tales. The train is deliberately theatrical rather than realistic — lighting, sound and hand-crafted figures create fleeting, cinematic episodes that capture the tone of each story. Alongside the train, the venue stages short, child-focused theatre performances several times a day that use song, movement and simple sets to engage very young audiences.

Junibacken’s play areas are organised around recognisable locations from children’s books: a crooked, climbable house, cosy nooks for storytelling, tactile installations and props scaled for small hands. One of the most photographed features is a life-size version of Pippi Longstocking’s Villa Villekulla — a boisterous, climbable set where children can invent their own scenes. Materials and colours are chosen to be durable and inviting: rounded edges, soft textiles, bright yet warm palettes and clear sightlines for supervising adults.

The on-site children’s bookstore stocks a wide selection of Scandinavian titles and translated picture books, making it easy to extend a visit into an at-home reading project. The family café serves simple, child-friendly dishes and pastries and offers waterside seating with views over the Djurgården canal. Practical touches throughout the venue — stroller parking policies, baby-carry loans and clear information about theatre bookings — reflect a focus on family logistics as much as on play.

Junibacken is aimed primarily at families with toddlers and early primary children; its scale, interactivity and theatrical rhythm suit short visits of a few hours rather than long museum tours.
