Nearby, the Tropical Greenhouse presents a controlled, humid environment where a small number of visitors enter to experience an indoor rainforest with tall palms, banana plants and epiphytes. Scattered across the grounds are stone paths, trimmed hedges, benches and a modest café that opens seasonally.

The garden is organised into clearly defined areas: the geometric Baroque beds with clipped outlines; the systematic quarters that group plants for teaching and comparison; a kitchen and vegetable garden demonstrating cultivated edibles; an alpine rockery for mountain species; and an arboretum that showcases woody plants and map‑worthy specimens. Labels and information panels identify many species, and seasonal rotations ensure different focal points through the year.

Seasons transform the visitor experience: spring brings concentrated bursts of bulbs and early flowering trees; summer produces exuberant borders and leafy canopies ideal for picnics; autumn shifts the palette to seedheads and russet tones; and winter exposes the structural geometry of paths, hedges and the Baroque layout. Inside the glass houses, expect humid warmth, the scent of damp soil and foliage, and the sound of quiet footsteps and distant water features.

Cultural role and activities

Managed by the university, the garden serves both the public and the academic community: it is used for teaching, botanical research, public exhibitions and occasional concerts or art installations. Guided walks and themed tours take place at certain times of year, and the garden’s event calendar includes workshops and seasonal displays led by staff and collaborators.
