The exposed rock faces and scree combine with shallower soils on the plateau to produce a patchwork of vegetation types, each supporting different insects and small mammals adapted to the dry, lime-rich niches.

Human presence is visible but unobtrusive: scattered remains, old boundary markers and field terraces hint at long-term grazing and seasonal land use on Kinnekulle. The reserve reads as a quiet, contemplative landscape. From cliff-edge vantage points you can look across to the sweep of Lake Vänern and distant shoreline features; elsewhere the soundscape is dominated by birdsong, the rustle of leaves and the occasional lowing of grazing stock. Paths and simple tracks lead through differing habitats, giving short wanderers and longer walkers a varied sequence of views and textures.

Spring is the botanical high point: carpets of early flowers and the emergence of woodland ground flora are most impressive then, while summer brings warm, insect-filled meadows. Raptors and passerines use the cliffs and woodland edges for nesting and hunting.
