At the heart of Vättlefjäll lies a network of lakes like Surtesjön, Stora Björsjön, Mollsjön, and Holmesjön, many artificially dammed and linked by hand-dug canals from centuries past. These waterways, originally crafted to harness water power for local mills and factories in Surte, now form calm, interconnected pools ideal for reflection and recreation. Lakes attract swimmers, anglers, and birdwatchers, with loons protected during breeding season from May to June. The area's ecological richness stems from its varied microhabitats—wetlands, dry ridges, and shaded glades—fostering a mosaic of species that thrive amid minimal human intervention.

Spring brings blooming orchids and migratory birds, while summer hums with canoe rentals at Vättlestugan and splashing at Surtesjön beach. Autumn paints the foliage in gold and crimson, ideal for berry picking along paths. Winter transforms trails into snowshoe routes, with frozen lakes offering stark, silent beauty.
