Ancient forest shaped by fire

Vändåtberget is a living archive of northern boreal forest where past fires have sculpted an open, uneven canopy and left a mosaic of veteran pines, young regrowth and deadwood-rich stands. The reserve contains large, long-stretched moraine ridges and outcrops of gray Revsund granite that rise through sandy soils deposited above the highest coastline. Evidence of repeated historic fires is visible in charred trunks, fire-scarred bark and expanses of gnarled, sun-browned pine that give the place a rugged, primeval character.

Habitats, plants and fungi to watch for

The reserve includes a variety of wet and dry habitats: old-growth pine-dominated slopes, pockets of long-lived spruce in wetter hollows and scattered aspen and deciduous glades. The herb layer is locally rich—look for species such as spädstarr and skogsnycklar while the ravines and southern slopes host dense herb communities. Old trunks and standing deadwood harbour bracket fungi and wood-decay specialists like grovticka and blomkålssvamp, plus fragrant doftticka on sallow; these fungal communities underline the area’s conservation value.

Water features and the small lakes

Tucked between the ridges are several small tarns—Inner-Abborrtjärnen, Lill-Abborrtjärnen, Älgtjärnen and Stor-Abborrtjärnen—with calm water surfaces that act as sensory focal points in the forest. These ponds add habitat diversity and a reflective stillness: you’ll find the stony shorelines, emergent vegetation and quiet bird activity concentrated around these waterbodies. Parts of Ytter-Holmsjön fall within the reserve boundary, extending the area’s link to wetland and aquatic ecosystems.

Birds, mammals and ecological networks

Vändåtberget supports a rich assemblage of birdlife and mammals adapted to old-growth and fire-structured forests. Typical species include insectivorous flycatchers and warblers in early summer; capercaillie, hazel grouse and grouse species use the denser patches and boreal clearings; corvids and woodpeckers exploit standing deadwood. The combination of standing snags, fallen logs and mixed-age trees creates important habitat for invertebrates and cavity-nesters, sustaining food webs that reflect a largely undisturbed forest dynamic.

Trails, overnight shelter and visitor infrastructure

Paths through the reserve vary from level shoreline tracks to steeper, rocky ascents across moraine ridges; the long Urskogsleden passes through or near the protected area and a shorter loop climbs onto the mountain slopes. Near Inner-Abborrtjärnen a simple hut with a wood-burning stove, an outdoor fire site, a woodshed and a composting toilet offers basic, low-impact shelter for overnight visitors. Facilities are deliberately rustic: the reserve’s aim is to preserve natural processes while allowing careful, minimal-impact visitation.

Conservation status and management approach

Established in 1989 and expanded in 2015, Vändåtberget is managed to maintain its largely untouched forest processes and to preserve habitat types listed under European habitat directives. The site is designated under Natura 2000 and is actively managed with targeted measures such as controlled nature burns to maintain the open, fire-dependent pine woodland that supports its characteristic species. The reserve’s management balances non-intervention with targeted conservation to retain its ecological integrity.
