Limestone Ridge and Ancient Quarry

Kalkbergets Naturreservat rises as a dramatic 30-40 meter high bergrygg, a rugged mountain ridge primarily composed of ancient urbergskalksten, or Precambrian limestone. Stretching approximately 1.2 kilometers along its length, the steep southeastern face dominates the landscape, creating a natural amphitheater-like formation. At the northeastern end, an old abandoned kalkbrott, or limestone quarry, scars the rock, its sheer walls a testament to past industrial extraction. Steps carved into the quarry face provide an accessible ascent to the summit, where the terrain opens to windswept plateaus dotted with resilient vegetation.

Rich Biodiversity in a Unique Habitat

The reserve's calcareous bedrock and varied topography foster a regionally uncommon flora and fauna. Characteristic plants include hairy melic grass, field sagewort, bloody cranesbill, wall rue, and white stonecrop, thriving in the lime-rich soils. Butterflies such as the Niobe fritillary, small blue, and silver-spotted skipper flit among the blooms. Reptiles find refuge here too, notably the hasselsnok, or smooth snake, Sweden's rarest serpent, which favors the sun-warmed rocks. This 16.2 hectare land and 3.1 hectare water area supports a delicate ecosystem shaped by geological forces.

Human history imprints the landscape through the disused quarry, remnants of Södertälje's lime production era. Established to safeguard both natural and cultural values, the reserve highlights how extraction shaped the region. Designated in 2006 by Södertälje's Environmental Committee and partly as a Natura 2000 site, it maintains habitats under EU directives.
