How the ruins came to look this way

Both churches fell out of regular liturgical use when nearby communities merged and new parish churches were built in the 18th and 19th centuries. Episodes such as repairs in the 16th century, later fires and deliberate decommissioning left the churches roofless and partially collapsed. Conservation work in the 20th century stabilised walls and cleared vegetation so the fragments could be understood and appreciated as archaeological monuments.
