An old-growth pocket with a lake at its heart

Stora Alsjön is a deliberately untamed reserve where a patch of mature conifer forest surrounds a clear, shallow lake dotted with waterlilies and fringed by reedbeds. Much of the woodland has been left to natural processes, so you’ll encounter knotted veteran pines, fallen trunks in various stages of decay and the mossy hummocks of a quiet mire. Rock outcrops and small cliffs rise above the shore, creating short viewpoints that frame the lake and its islands.

What makes the reserve ecologically important

The mix of old trees, abundant dead wood and near-natural wetland habitats supports many species that need continuity and structural complexity — particularly fungi and invertebrates that live in rot and bark, as well as lichens and mosses. The site is part of a Natura 2000 area and contains several smaller lakes besides Stora Alsjön, giving a connected wetland network that benefits waterfowl, amphibians and wetland plants. Traces of past wildfire are visible in parts of the forest; these burnt patches are now important for species that rely on early-successional habitats.

How the reserve feels on the trail

Trails here are generally short and straightforward: narrow forest tracks, wooden steps where the ground is uneven and a few rocky scrambles to reach outlooks. Underfoot you’ll notice soft moss, the occasional bed of needles and the scent of resin and damp earth. Sound is a key part of the experience — bird calls, the wind in crowns, insects near the shoreline and the soft lap of water against stone when you reach the lake margin.

Facilities and seasonal offers

Facilities are intentionally modest to keep the feeling of wilderness: two designated picnic areas with simple shelters, benches and marked firepits; a small, maintained parking area beside the reserve boundary; and information panels describing local rules and natural highlights. The picnic headland by Stora Alsjön gives a natural place to rest and watch dragonflies in summer or enjoy the bare-line geometry of the landscape in winter when the forest outlines are more visible.

Practical conservation rules and visitor behaviour

To protect sensitive habitats the reserve has rules that restrict damaging activities: felling or removing wood, disturbing the substrate of mires and removing fungi and wood-inhabiting organisms are prohibited, while picking berries, flowers and common edible mushrooms is permitted where sustainable. Fires are only allowed at designated sites. These measures help preserve the veteran-tree structure and the rich deadwood microhabitats that make the reserve ecologically valuable.

Why bring slow attention rather than speed

This is a site best experienced at walking pace with pauses. The reserve rewards patience: small fungi on a rotting log, a shy warbler moving through the branches, or the way light pools on the water and reveals lily pads and submerged vegetation. Short loops and lookout points make Stora Alsjön an ideal place for a reflective morning, a family picnic, a brief nature study or a photographic photowalk that privileges texture, light and quiet detail.
