Since around 1100, a cathedral has graced the site in what was then Västra Aros, now Västerås. The first stone church rose in the 12th century, constructed from gray stone. By 1244, expansions began with brick, leading to the western part's rededication on August 16, 1271—traditionally marking its formal opening. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist, it served as one of Sweden's early spring churches.Over centuries, the structure evolved through meticulous additions, reflecting the era's architectural ambitions.

The 14th and 15th centuries saw significant growth: the choir extended eastward with a three-aisled termination, and a tower rose around 1420, replacing an earlier ridge rider. Bishop Lydeke Abelsson oversaw eastern expansions in the 1460s, incorporating chapels north and south of the choir, transforming it into a five-aisled hall church in Gothic style with an ambulatory behind the high altar.By 1517, the cathedral reached its current 93-meter length, with the tower exceeding 100 meters. Nicodemus Tessin the Younger shaped the spire and outer roof in the 1690s, while the west facade boasts whitewashed blind arcades.

Inside, a medieval altarpiece of exceptional quality captivates, its double doors revealing painted Last Supper scenes during Advent and Lent. Sweden's richest collection of epitaphs from the Great Power era adorns walls, alongside 163 intact gravestones, including King Erik XIV's tomb—a poignant link to Sweden's turbulent monarchy.The triumphant crucifix hangs above the choir screen, and light from chandeliers around the high altar illuminates intricate details. A 1510 stone relief near the main entrance depicts a bishop with staff, evoking the site's sacred lineage.

Opened to the public in 2017, Skattkammaren occupies the medieval chapter house, once a warming room and sacristy. This treasure chamber exhibits artifacts from Västerås Domkyrka and regional churches, narrating Christian faith from historical and modern perspectives. Medieval items, liturgical vessels, and textiles offer intimate glimpses into centuries of devotion.

Four bells peal from the tower—largest weighing 4078 kg, tuned to giss0-h0-ciss1-fiss1—ringing over a thousand times yearly for services, baptisms, weddings, and funerals. The cathedral pulses with life: concerts from classical to premieres, choir performances, lectures on events like the Stockholm Bloodbath, and programs for schools and children.As a rainbow cathedral, it embraces inclusivity in Västerås's heart, drawing 200,000 visitors annually while serving as parish church.
