Galgberget crowns a bleak, stony cliff above the sea and takes its name from the medieval gallows that still stand on the plateau. Three roughly six-metre-high pillars of dressed limestone rise within a low circular stone wall; where once wooden beams and iron hooks were fixed, the skeletal stonework now reads as a stark monument to a legal system of earlier centuries.

Excavations around the gallows have revealed human remains and burial traces that connect the place with punishments and burials dating back many centuries. Finds point to use from the high Middle Ages through the 19th century, and the monuments — the stone circle and pillars — give the site an unusual and macabre clarity: a public ritual place intentionally visible from both town and sea.

The reserve’s character is a mixture of exposed limestone pavement, scrub and patches of coniferous and mixed woodland below the cliff. From the crest there are sweeping sea views and long sightlines across the coastline; the harsh geology supports limekiln ruins and small pockets of wetter ground where water gathers beneath the cliff edge.

Galgberget’s story is not only gallows and graves: nearby traces include old quarry workings, lime-burning remains and even a period when motor-sport activity left its mark. These layers show how the headland has been reused across centuries — from industrial activity and local agriculture to more recent recreational uses — while the gallows themselves remain the dominant cultural marker.

On the plateau the wind is often the strongest presence: it carries salt and the distant hiss of sea, moves through thorny shrubs and brings gull calls from below. The stone underfoot can be sharp and uneven; the low circular wall frames the pillars and forces a close, intimate encounter with the site’s history. Depending on season the vegetation shifts from brittle browns and silvery grasses to verdant green and birdsong in spring.

Galgberget is protected both as a cultural monument and as a nature reserve, recognised for its rare combination of visible medieval fabric and coastal geology. Its prominence on the cliff makes it a durable symbol in Gotland’s historical landscape: a place where geology, human ritual and island economy meet and where the visible traces of justice and labour remain legible in stone.
