Origins and medieval function

Snäckgärdsporten dates to the late 1290s and is one of the older gate towers in Visby’s medieval fortification system. Erected where an earlier stretch of the older town wall met later expansions, the gate formed a defended passage through the ringmur and sat beside the sturdy Silverhättan tower. Its thick stonework and narrow vaulted passage reflect its original role as a controlled entry point, part of a wider set of gates and towers designed to protect a prosperous Hanseatic trading town.

Names, changes and the quieter centuries

Through the centuries the gate has been called by several names, including Västerport and Odeport, and for a period it was known under a family-related name in local records. The gate’s fortunes rose and fell with the town: at times it was sealed up and at others reopened, and in the 1700s parts of the passage were intentionally blocked. Traces of earlier openings and reused masonry are still visible in the surrounding curtain wall and hint at the sequence of repairs and alterations that the structure underwent.

The 2009 interior lookout and craft of the retrofit

In 2009 a sensitive interior intervention created a multi-storey wooden lookout inside the tower accessible from Silverhättan via a guardwalk and stair. The work used locally felled oak and pine and was designed to be invisible from outside the wall; from the rampart face no modern additions intrude on the medieval silhouette. The new timber floors and stairs provide safe vantage points while preserving the stone chamber beneath, letting visitors experience the layered contrasts of medieval masonry and warm, simple carpentry.

Views, setting and immediate landscape

From the elevated levels reached via the Silverhättan connection you look north and east over the defensive trenches known as Nordergravar and along the steep wooded slope called the Klinten toward the Baltic. The gate sits at the western stretch of the nordermur and anchors a sequence of towers and promenades along the wall; the scene combines the tactile grey of medieval stone, the soft green of summer embankments and the changing light over the sea beyond.

Architectural details to notice

Observe the vaulted passage profile, the thickness of the wall and the traces of earlier doorways and blocked arches; small niches and the worn stone threshold tell of centuries of footfall and local repairs. The tower’s height, relative to the adjacent curtain, and the placement of narrow embrasures and firing slits reveal its role in flanking defence. Inside the lookout, the timber joins and handrails are deliberately straightforward, emphasising the contrast between the vernacular carpentry and the heavy medieval fabric.

Character and why it matters

Snäckgärdsporten is more than a gap in stone: it is a spoke in Visby’s long defensive ring that charts the town’s maritime and mercantile history. Its survival, later reopening and careful adaptation make it a quiet but instructive place to sense how medieval urban defence met changing civic life. Standing by the gate or peering from the wooden levels, you can read centuries of practical decisions in stone, wood and the shaping of the surrounding earthworks.
