ETH Zürich is the main city-centre campus of one of Switzerland’s leading science and technology universities. It is not a detached campus on the edge of town; it sits within the city’s daily rhythm, above the old town and close to the university district.

Most visitors come for a compact visit rather than a long museum-style tour. The main draw is the Polyterrasse, a broad viewing platform where the city opens out below you in layers of rooftops, church towers, streets, and the river corridor beyond. The campus itself feels active and functional, with students, staff, and visitors moving through a mix of historic and modern buildings. That gives the place a lived-in academic atmosphere rather than a curated monument feel. You can pass through quickly for the view, or stay longer for a self-guided walk, an exhibition, or a coffee break on campus.

The campus rises on a hill above the centre, so the approach is part of the experience. Streets tighten, the gradient increases, and the city noise drops slightly as you move into the university zone. Around the main building, the setting alternates between stone façades, open terraces, paved walkways, and pockets of greenery. It is a place where old and new sit side by side: the historic core carries the institution’s 19th-century identity, while the surrounding campus reflects its modern role in research, engineering, and applied science.

Travellers stop here for three reasons. First, it is one of Zürich’s best free viewpoints, especially in clear weather. Second, the main building and campus offer a straightforward way to see a major Swiss institution from the inside, without needing a formal appointment. Third, it works well as a practical break between the old town, the university quarter, and the city centre. It suits architecture fans, prospective students, and anyone who wants a short urban stop with a strong sense of place.

Access is easiest by tram or by the short uphill walk from the centre, with the Polybahn offering a useful shortcut for those who want to reduce the climb. The campus is generally free to enter, though some interiors, events, and guided visits may have their own rules. Facilities such as cafés, restaurants, visitor information, seating, and indoor common areas make it easy to extend a visit, but the experience remains weather-sensitive: clear days reward you with the best terrace views, while fog, rain, or snow flatten the outlook. For most travellers, 30 to 45 minutes is enough for the main viewpoint, while 1.5 to 2.5 hours allows time to explore the campus properly.
