Planetenweg is a themed hiking trail on Uetliberg, Zurich’s local mountain, where the distances between the planets are translated into walking time and trail spacing. It is less a single attraction than a practical outdoor route with an educational layer: you follow marked sections, read the solar-system boards, and keep moving along a ridge landscape above the city. The trail is generally regarded as easy, which makes it a common choice for families, casual walkers, and anyone wanting a manageable half-day outing rather than a strenuous mountain hike.

The route runs through wooded slopes and open ridge sections, with frequent long views across Zurich, Lake Zurich, and, in good weather, the Alps. The mood is calm and outdoorsy rather than remote. On clear days the panorama is the main event; in fog or winter haze, the trail can feel more subdued, with the city hidden below and the ridge sitting above the cloud layer. Because it is exposed to the weather, the experience changes noticeably with season, light, and visibility.

Most visitors approach from Zurich by public transport to the Uetliberg area, then start walking along the trail toward Felsenegg. The walk is usually done at an unhurried pace, with pauses at the boards and viewpoints. A one-way outing is the most practical format: many walkers finish by taking the Felsenegg cable car down to Adliswil and returning to Zurich by transit, which keeps the day simple and avoids retracing the same path. The trail itself is not technically demanding, but it is still a real hike, so expect uneven ground, changing gradients, and conditions that can become slippery after rain or snow.

The appeal lies in the combination of easy access, open-air exercise, and a clear sense of place. You get a city escape without leaving Zurich’s transport network, plus a route that gives children and adults a concrete way to picture the scale of the solar system. It works well for a short reset between city plans, a low-pressure outing for couples, or a straightforward nature walk for solo travellers. The trail is strongest when the weather cooperates, but even on less perfect days it offers a useful, well-used stretch of urban mountain landscape rather than a polished tourist spectacle.

Plan on about two hours for the trail itself, or three to four hours if you include breaks, viewpoints, and the return journey. Facilities are limited along the route, so it is sensible to carry water and check conditions before setting out. The trail is not suitable for wheelchairs, and winter conditions can make footing more demanding. Its strengths are simplicity, scenery, and transit access: a compact, readable hike that fits easily into a Zurich stay.
