Getting there

Walking

From the center of Mbeya, start at the Mbeya City Council office located on Nyerere Road. Head south on Nyerere Road for about 1 km until you reach the junction with Maji ya Chai Road. Turn left onto Maji ya Chai Road and continue for approximately 2 km. You will pass local shops and eateries, which can be a good place to grab some refreshments. Keep an eye out for local signage as you proceed. After about 2 km, you will reach a roundabout. Take the second exit onto the road leading towards the Mbeya Regional Hospital. Continue straight for about 1.5 km until you see a sign for Kawetele Mountain. The path will be marked, and you will begin your ascent towards the mountain.

Public Transport (Dala Dala)

From the Mbeya bus terminal, look for a Dala Dala (shared minibus) heading towards the direction of Kiwira. Board the Dala Dala and inform the conductor that you want to get off at the stop for Kawetele Mountain. The fare is usually very affordable, and the journey will take approximately 20-30 minutes depending on traffic. Once you reach the designated stop, exit the Dala Dala and follow the marked trail that leads towards the mountain. The entrance to the hiking path will be on your right after about 100 meters.

Bicycle Rental

If you prefer cycling, consider renting a bicycle in Mbeya. Start at the Mbeya Railway Station and head south on Maji ya Chai Road. Follow the same route as mentioned previously for walking, but you will be able to cover the distance faster on a bike. Ensure you have a map or GPS on your phone as you will need to navigate through some local roads. Once you reach the roundabout, head towards Mbeya Regional Hospital, then look for the sign directing you to Kawetele Mountain. The cycling route offers some beautiful views of the surrounding hills, so take your time and enjoy the ride.
