Hi, I'm Eve. Here are a few practical things to know before exploring Lake Ngozi.
Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the nearest major town, Mbeya. From Mbeya, take the A104 road heading southwest towards Tunduma. As you approach the town of Uliwa, turn onto the road leading to Lake Ngozi. The road may become unpaved, so be prepared for some rough terrain. Follow the signs for Lake Ngozi. It is approximately a 2-hour drive from Mbeya to the lake. Ensure you have a reliable GPS or a map, as signage may not always be clear.
Public Transportation
To reach Lake Ngozi using public transportation, take a bus from Mbeya to the town of Uliwa. The buses are frequent and the journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Once you arrive in Uliwa, you can hire a local taxi or a motorcycle (boda-boda) to take you the remaining distance to Lake Ngozi, which is about 30 minutes away. Be sure to negotiate the fare beforehand, as prices can vary. Expect to pay around 10,000 to 15,000 TZS for the taxi ride.
Hiking
If you are adventurous and enjoy hiking, you can opt for a trek to Lake Ngozi from Uliwa. Start your hike from Uliwa, which is approximately 10 kilometers away from the lake. The hike can take around 3 to 4 hours, depending on your pace. The trail is scenic but can be steep in certain sections, so ensure you have proper hiking shoes and enough water. This option allows you to experience the beautiful landscape of the Southern Zone.
