If you are starting from downtown Gatlinburg, head south on the main strip (Parkway). Walk for about 0.5 miles until you reach the intersection with River Road. Turn left onto River Road and continue walking for approximately 0.3 miles. You will see the Gatlinburg Trail Trailhead on your right at 916 River Rd. Look for the entrance that features a sign indicating the trailhead.
