Ban Phe, the mainland departure point for ferries to Ko Samet, lies farther along the coast and is a separate destination. U-Tapao Rayong–Pattaya International Airport is the nearest commercial airport, although onward road transport must be arranged rather than assumed to be direct.

The beach area is spread along a coastal road rather than arranged around a walkable town centre. History of Rayong Beach

A Coastal Landscape Before Resort Development

The Rayong Beach area developed from a coastal landscape of sandy shore, casuarina-covered margins, small settlements and fishing-related activity rather than from a formal urban centre. Mae Ramphueng's broad beach was long valued locally as an accessible stretch of coast south-west of Rayong town, while the nearby headlands and offshore islands remained part of the wider maritime environment. Its distance from the provincial capital helped preserve a comparatively open character, even as roads and private transport made the beach increasingly accessible for day trips.

National-Park Protection

A major change in the area's modern history came with the creation of Khao Laem Ya–Mu Ko Samet National Park in 1981. The protected area brought together coastal land around Khao Laem Ya, islands including Ko Samet and marine environments in the eastern Gulf. For the mainland coast near Rayong Beach, national-park status helped keep important headlands, forest and shoreline landscapes under conservation management while tourism expanded elsewhere along the province's coast. The park also made the area significant as an entry point to Rayong's natural rather than solely urban attractions.

From Local Shore to Domestic Seaside Retreat

Improved road access and Rayong's growth as an industrial and commercial province encouraged the development of Mae Ramphueng as a domestic seaside retreat. Small hotels, guesthouses, restaurants and convenience businesses appeared along the beach corridor, serving residents of Rayong and visitors travelling from Bangkok and the eastern provinces. Development remained dispersed, without producing the dense entertainment strip associated with larger Thai resort destinations.
