Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
Start your journey from Nuku'alofa, the capital city of Tonga. Head south on Vuna Road (Hwy 1) and follow the signs towards the Tongatapu Airport. Continue driving until you reach the southern coast. Once you arrive at the coast, look for signs indicating boat access points to nearby islands. Note that Tufaka Island is not directly accessible by car; you'll need to find a local boat service. The trip to the nearest departure point may take around 30 minutes depending on traffic.
Public Transportation
From Nuku'alofa, take a local bus that heads south towards the Tongatapu Airport. Inform the bus driver that you need to get off at the nearest coastal access point for boat transport to Tufaka Island. The bus fare is generally around 2-5 TOP (Tongan Paʻanga). Once you arrive at the coastal area, you will need to hire a local boat service. Be sure to negotiate the fare with the boat operator, which can typically range from 50-100 TOP depending on the size of the boat and the number of passengers.
Boat
After reaching the coastal access point, look for local boat operators. Tufaka Island is not serviced by regular ferries, so you'll need to arrange for a private boat. Once you've agreed on the fare and the boat operator is ready, the journey to Tufaka Island will take approximately 20-30 minutes. Make sure to confirm the return trip with the operator before leaving, as boat services may not be frequent.
