Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the town of Nefta, which is a popular base for exploring The Djerid. Head southeast on Route 3 towards Chott el Gharsa. The drive is approximately 20 kilometers and will take about 25 minutes. Follow the signs for Chott el Gharsa. As you approach, you will see the vast salt flats that define the landscape. Keep an eye out for the turn off to the lake area, which may be marked.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a louage (shared taxi) from Nefta to the nearest drop-off point towards Chott el Gharsa. Louages leave regularly and the fare is typically around 5-10 Tunisian Dinars. Once dropped off, you may need to walk approximately 2 kilometers to reach the lake. Ensure to ask the driver to let you off at a suitable point that leads to the lake as not all drivers are familiar with the exact location.
Bicycle or Walking
If you're feeling adventurous and are based in Nefta, consider renting a bicycle to ride to Chott el Gharsa. The route is mostly flat and scenic, allowing you to enjoy the unique desert landscape. The bike rental costs about 10-15 Tunisian Dinars for a day. If you choose to walk, it’s a scenic trek but be prepared for a longer journey of about 2-3 hours depending on your pace.
