If you are traveling by car, head towards Maçka from Isauria. The monastery is located about 30 kilometers from the city center of Trabzon. Use the D-885 road, which is well-signposted. As you approach Maçka, follow the signs for Sümela Monastery. You will enter Altındere Valley National Park, where the monastery is situated. Note that there is an entrance fee for the national park; ensure you have cash handy as it may not accept credit cards. Parking is available at the site.

Public Transportation
To reach Sümela Monastery using public transportation, take a bus from Trabzon to Maçka. Buses frequently leave from the Trabzon bus terminal. Upon arrival in Maçka, you can catch a local minibus or taxi to Altındere Valley National Park. Ensure you confirm with the driver that they will take you to the monastery. Be aware that the last return buses from Maçka to Trabzon may leave in the early evening, so plan your visit accordingly.

Walking
For the adventurous traveler, if you reach the entrance of Altındere Valley National Park by car or public transport, you can hike the final stretch to Sümela Monastery. The hiking trail is well-marked and offers beautiful views of the valley. The walk from the park entrance to the monastery is approximately 1.5 kilometers and may take around 30-45 minutes on foot. Wear comfortable shoes and carry water as there are no facilities along the trail.
