History of Buca

From Rural Settlement to Summer Retreat

Buca began as a settlement outside the historic urban core of Izmir, in a greener inland landscape of orchards, vineyards and cultivated land. During the nineteenth century, improvements in transport and Izmir’s growing commercial importance encouraged affluent European and Levantine families to build country houses in the area. Buca’s climate, distance from the crowded port quarter and garden setting made it attractive as a seasonal residence. The district’s later streets and surviving villas still reflect this transition from rural outskirts to a prosperous suburban retreat, although much of the original open landscape has been absorbed by twentieth- and twenty-first-century construction.

The Levantine Villa Landscape

Buca’s most distinctive historic character developed through the villas, gardens and institutions established by families involved in Izmir’s international trade. Forbes Mansion is the most recognisable surviving association with this period, while older houses around the historic centre point to a wider architectural landscape rather than a single preserved enclave. The area also contained Christian communities and places of worship connected with the cosmopolitan society of nineteenth-century Izmir. Political and economic changes after the late Ottoman period, followed by population movements and the transformation of Izmir’s suburbs, altered Buca’s social composition and the use of many former residences.

Rail, Roads and Urban Expansion

Buca’s connection with Izmir strengthened as road and rail links tied the inland settlement more closely to the city and its commercial hinterland. The historic Buca railway, associated with the wider Izmir–Aydın rail network, helped support movement between the district and the city, although the line no longer functions as an ordinary passenger railway. During the twentieth century, population growth and apartment construction changed Buca from a low-density retreat into a large urban district. Older lanes, garden walls and detached houses increasingly stood beside dense residential blocks, schools and busy arterial roads.

University Life and Contemporary Buca

The establishment and expansion of Dokuz Eylül University gave Buca a major contemporary institution and helped shape its cafés, rental housing, transport patterns and youthful public life. At the same time, the district continued to grow as a residential area serving Izmir’s expanding metropolitan population.
