Car
If you're driving, start from Trabzon city center. Take the D-885 highway towards Maçka. After approximately 20 km, you will reach Maçka. Continue on the D-885 for another 15 km until you see signs for Altındere Valley National Park, where Sümela Monastery is located. There is a parking area available near the entrance, and a small parking fee may apply (check local signage for current rates). From the parking area, it is about a 1.5 km hike uphill to reach the monastery.
Public Transport
To reach Sümela Monastery via public transport, take a minibus (dolmuş) from Trabzon city center to Maçka. The journey takes approximately 30-40 minutes. Once you arrive in Maçka, look for local transport options such as a taxi or shared van that can take you to Altındere Valley National Park. Alternatively, you can walk the 6 km from Maçka to the monastery, although this is a longer trek. Be prepared for some elevation gain. Ensure you check the return schedules for minibuses back to Trabzon.
Hiking
