Car
If you are driving from Trabzon, take the D885 highway towards Maçka. After approximately 30 kilometers, look for the signs directing you to Sümela Monastery. You will turn left onto a smaller road that leads you into Altındere Valley National Park. The monastery is located about 8 kilometers up this road. There is a parking area near the entrance, but be aware that there may be a small parking fee (around 20-30 TL) and an entrance fee for the national park (approximately 50 TL).
Public Transportation
From Trabzon, you can take a minibus (dolmuş) from the main bus station (Otogar) to Maçka. The journey takes about 45 minutes and costs around 20 TL. Once you arrive in Maçka, you can catch a local dolmuş that specifically goes to Sümela Monastery. This second leg of the journey will take around 20-30 minutes and costs approximately 10 TL. Make sure to check the return schedule for minibuses back to Trabzon to plan your visit accordingly.
Hiking
For those who enjoy hiking, there is a scenic trail that can be accessed from the village of Altındere, which is about 5 kilometers from the monastery. The hike to Sümela Monastery is moderately challenging and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Ensure you wear appropriate footwear and bring plenty of water. The trail offers beautiful views of the surrounding nature. There is no fee for using the hiking trail, but you should still pay the entrance fee for the monastery and national park upon arrival.
