Majestic Heights of Khrebet Kozly-Dag: A Mountainous Marvel

Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start from the city of Ashgabat, which is the nearest major city. Take the Ahal Region road towards the Köpetdag Mountains. Once you are on the road, follow signs leading to the mountains. After approximately 50 kilometers, you will come to a fork in the road. Take the left fork leading towards the village of Gokdepe. Continue driving for another 30 kilometers until you reach the foot of the Köpetdag Mountains. From here, you can park your car in a designated area and begin the hike towards Khrebet Kozly-Dag. Ensure you have a map or GPS device as some areas may not be well-marked.

• Public Transportation

  To use public transportation, first, take a bus or shared taxi from Ashgabat to Gokdepe. Buses leave frequently from the central bus station and the fare is approximately 5-10 TMT (Turkmen Manat). The journey takes about an hour. Once you arrive in Gokdepe, you will need to hire a local taxi or find a shared vehicle to take you to the foot of the Köpetdag Mountains. This may cost around 15-25 TMT depending on your negotiation skills and the number of passengers. After reaching your drop-off point at the mountain base, you can start your hike to Khrebet Kozly-Dag.

• Hiking

  After arriving at the base of the Köpetdag Mountains, you will need to hike approximately 7 kilometers to reach Khrebet Kozly-Dag. The trail is moderately steep, so prepare accordingly with suitable footwear and water. Follow the worn path leading upwards; it will take roughly 2-3 hours to reach the summit, depending on your fitness level. Make sure to carry a map or a GPS device, as some parts of the trail may not be clearly marked.
