Getting there

Car

If you're traveling by car, start your journey in the town of Mbale, which is approximately 50 km from Mount Elgon. From Mbale, take the A109 road towards the town of Budadiri. Follow the signs for Mount Elgon National Park. The drive will take about 1.5 hours. The last stretch will take you through Budadiri, where you can stop for refreshments or hire a local guide. Make sure to have enough fuel before heading into the park, as there are limited fuel stations.

Public Transport (Matatu)

To reach Mount Elgon using public transport, start at the Mbale taxi park. Look for a Matatu (shared taxi) heading to Budadiri. The fare is approximately 5,000 Ugandan Shillings (UGX) and the journey will take around 45 minutes. Once you arrive in Budadiri, you can hire a local motorcycle taxi (boda-boda) to take you closer to the park entrance. The boda-boda fare should be between 3,000 to 5,000 UGX depending on your negotiation skills.

Walking

If you're adventurous and already in Budadiri, you can choose to walk to the park entrance. This is a great way to experience local life and scenery. The walk will take approximately 1-2 hours depending on your pace. Follow the main road leading out of Budadiri and ask locals for directions to the Mount Elgon National Park entrance.

Boda-Boda

After arriving in Budadiri, you can hire a boda-boda for a more direct route to the Mount Elgon National Park entrance. The fare typically ranges from 3,000 to 10,000 UGX depending on your negotiation. Make sure to agree on the price before the ride. The journey should take about 15-20 minutes.
