Car
From any location in West Nile, head towards the main road leading to Kampala. If you're in Arua, take the Gulu-Arua Road (A1) and drive towards Gulu. Once you reach Gulu, continue south on the A1 road, which will take you through towns like Pakwach and Nakasongola. After approximately 5-6 hours of driving, you will reach Kampala. From Kampala, follow signs to Entebbe. Once in Entebbe, head to Nakiwogo, where Mabamba Shoebills watching is located. Look for signs directing you to the bird watching area as you approach Nakiwogo. Make sure to check for parking options near the site.
Public Transportation
Start your journey by taking a bus or shared taxi from Arua to Gulu. Buses to Gulu leave frequently throughout the day. The journey takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Once in Gulu, you can catch another bus heading to Kampala. This leg of the journey will take around 4-5 hours. Upon arriving in Kampala, transfer to a taxi or mini-bus going to Entebbe. The ride from Kampala to Entebbe takes about 1 hour. Once in Entebbe, take a taxi to Nakiwogo. Be sure to inform the driver that you are heading to Mabamba Shoebills watching.
Boat
Once you arrive in Nakiwogo, you may need to take a boat to reach the specific area for Shoebill watching. There are local boat operators available in Nakiwogo who offer tours to the Mabamba Swamp. It is advisable to contact the Mabamba Shoebills watching team in advance to arrange a boat ride. The cost of the boat ride may vary, so inquire about the fees beforehand. Expect to pay around 30,000 to 50,000 UGX for a group tour, depending on the number of people.
