Antrim Castle was originally constructed in 1613 by the English settler Sir Hugh Clotworthy and was later expanded by his son John Clotworthy in 1662. The castle served as a fortified mansion on the banks of the Sixmilewater River and was the seat of the Viscount Massereene family through marriage ties. Over centuries, the castle witnessed significant events, including a raid in the 1680s by Jacobite General Richard Hamilton, who looted valuable silverware and furnishings. The castle was rebuilt in a Georgian-Gothic style in 1813 and further enlarged in 1887, featuring a distinctive six-sided Italian turret. Despite its grandeur, a devastating fire during a family ball in 1922 destroyed the castle, and the ruins were demolished in the 1970s, leaving only a few architectural fragments such as the Italian stair tower and gatehouse.

The visitor centre in Clotworthy House provides insight into the estate’s evolution and the families who lived there, enriching the visitor experience.
