Origins and Early History of Glenarm Castle
Glenarm Castle stands on the site of one of Northern Ireland's oldest estates, with a castle presence dating back to the 13th century. The original castle was established by the Bisset family, who made Glenarm their capital by 1260. This early stronghold included a kitchen garden, orchard, mill, and extensive grounds. The castle witnessed turbulent times, including a takeover by the O'Donnells in 1495 and eventual control by the MacDonnells in the early 16th century, who remain the estate's custodians to this day.Architectural Evolution Through Centuries
The present Glenarm Castle was built in 1636 by Sir Randal MacDonnell, 1st Earl of Antrim, but was burned down in 1642 during the Civil War. For nearly a century, it remained a ruin while the family resided elsewhere. The mid-18th century saw a major rebuilding in a grand Palladian style by the 5th Earl of Antrim, including elegant colonnades and pavilions.
