For more than 800 years, the village thrived as a vital grain milling centre along the Water of Leith, with up to eleven working mills harnessing the river’s power. These mills supported Edinburgh’s bakers and contributed significantly to the city’s food supply. The village was once known as the 'Water of Leith Village' and was closely linked to the Edinburgh Incorporated Trade of Baxters (bakers), whose symbols can still be seen carved into stone throughout the area.
