Architectural Elegance Rooted in History

Paxton House was built between 1758 and 1766 by Patrick Home of Billie, designed by the celebrated Adam brothers, John and James, who brought the neo-classical Palladian style to Britain. The house’s pink sandstone façade, symmetrical wings, and grand portico exemplify the refined taste of the Scottish Enlightenment era. The interiors feature stunning Adam designs with light, spacious rooms that have been carefully preserved or restored to their Georgian grandeur, offering a glimpse into 18th-century aristocratic life.

A Treasure Trove of Art and Furniture

The house holds one of the most important collections of Thomas Chippendale and William Trotter furniture, showcasing exquisite rococo and Adam styles. In 1811, architect Robert Reid added the Regency Picture Gallery, the largest purpose-built gallery in a Scottish country house, housing over 70 paintings on loan from the National Galleries of Scotland. The collection spans Scottish art from the 18th to the 20th centuries, including works by Sir Henry Raeburn, William McTaggart, and the Scottish Colourists, making Paxton House a cultural gem.

Expansive Grounds and Riverside Charm

Set on 80 acres of gardens, woodland, and parkland along the River Tweed, the estate offers scenic walking trails, picnic areas, and a family-friendly adventure playground. The Victorian boathouse and salmon fishing museum have been restored, and seasonal boat trips on the Tweed provide a unique perspective of the landscape. Wildlife observation hides and well-maintained paths make the grounds accessible and enjoyable for visitors of all ages.

Living History and Legacy

The Home family’s legacy is deeply woven into Paxton House’s story. Originally intended as a romantic gift by Patrick Home for his Prussian fiancée, the house later passed through generations, including Ninian Home, a sugar plantation owner with Caribbean ties. Today, the house and grounds are managed by the Paxton House Trust, preserving its historical, architectural, and cultural significance for public benefit.

Visitor Experience and Amenities

Visitors can enjoy guided tours led by knowledgeable staff who bring the house’s history to life. The Courtyard Tearoom, located in the converted stables, offers homemade cakes, light lunches, and a welcoming atmosphere with outdoor seating. Accessibility features include wheelchair ramps, lifts to the first floor, and accessible parking. The estate also hosts events, exhibitions, and educational programs throughout the year, making it a vibrant cultural destination.

Community and Conservation Efforts

Paxton House is committed to sustainability and conservation, maintaining its grounds as a protected natural habitat and encouraging eco-friendly visitor practices. The estate supports local wildlife and offers educational opportunities about its historical connections, including the complex legacy of slavery linked to the Home family’s Caribbean estates. This blend of heritage and environmental stewardship enriches the visitor experience.
