Smailholm Tower stands as a quintessential example of a Scottish Borders peel tower, built in the mid-15th century by the Pringle family, wardens of Ettrick Forest. The tower is a rectangular stone structure approximately 20 meters high, with defensive walls over two meters thick made from black volcanic rock and red sandstone accents. Its five storeys include vaulted ceilings and narrow windows with iron grills, designed for protection during frequent border skirmishes. Defensive features such as gun loops and battlements highlight its role as a fortified residence in a turbulent era.

Inside, the lowest floors served as storage with vaulted basements, while the upper floors were living quarters, including a main hall and bedrooms. The tower’s compact design balanced security and domestic comfort. A spiral stone staircase connects the floors, though it is narrow and steep. The tower inspired Sir Walter Scott, who spent part of his childhood nearby; exhibits inside include costume figures and tapestries illustrating border ballads and Scott’s literary legacy, enriching the visitor experience with cultural heritage.

Perched on a rocky crag, Smailholm Tower offers breathtaking views across the Scottish Borders and the Cheviot Hills. From the battlements and wall-walks, visitors can see sweeping panoramas of the countryside, including distant landmarks visible on clear days. The tower’s elevated position was strategic for defense and remains a highlight for photographers and history enthusiasts alike.

Managed by Historic Environment Scotland, the tower is open seasonally from April to September, with daily hours except Fridays and Saturdays. The site includes a visitor centre with displays and an audio guide that brings the tower’s history to life. Access involves a 190-meter path from the car park over uneven terrain, and the interior’s narrow staircases may limit accessibility. There are no toilets on site, with the nearest facilities in Kelso. Assistance dogs are permitted, but visitor dogs are not.

Originally, the tower was the centre of a small settlement with courtyards, cottages, stables, and a mill nearby, traces of which remain visible. The surrounding land is still used for grazing, preserving the rural character. The tower’s architecture and setting provide insight into medieval life on the volatile Anglo-Scottish border, reflecting both the defensive needs and domestic life of its inhabitants.
