Tantallon Castle Travel Guide

Tantallon Castle was constructed in the mid-14th century by William Douglas, a nobleman elevated to Earl of Douglas in 1358. Situated on a rocky promontory overlooking the Firth of Forth, its strategic coastal position offered natural defense on one side and formidable stone curtain walls on the landward side. The castle became the seat of the Red Douglas branch, the Earls of Angus, who held it for over 300 years. Throughout its history, Tantallon was besieged multiple times, notably by James IV in 1491, James V in 1528, and finally by Oliver Cromwell’s forces in 1651, whose artillery caused devastating damage leading to the castle’s abandonment.

Tantallon exemplifies medieval defensive architecture, built before gunpowder artillery dominated warfare. Its thick, high curtain wall enclosed a large courtyard and was nearly windowless to resist trebuchets, battering rams, and archers. The castle features a massive five-storey central tower flanked by high defensive walls and towers. Later adaptations included filling wall chambers to absorb cannon fire, adding gun holes, and constructing external gun defenses such as a ravelin and a gun tower near the outer gate. Despite these upgrades, Cromwell’s heavy artillery breached the defenses, leaving the castle in ruin.

Today, visitors can roam the extensive castle grounds, including the inner courtyard, battlements, and remnants of the Great Hall. The castle’s cliffside location affords breathtaking panoramic views of the Bass Rock, a famous gannet colony, and the North Sea. While access to the east tower staircase, doocot (dovecot), and vaults is currently closed due to masonry work, the central tower and battlements remain accessible for exploration. The castle also features a dark, atmospheric pit prison that reveals the harsher aspects of medieval life.

Tantallon Castle is family-friendly and popular with history enthusiasts and photographers. The site has information boards scattered around, though a guidebook is recommended for deeper historical context. Facilities include a shop selling refreshments and medieval-themed souvenirs, restrooms near the entrance, and accessible ground-floor areas. Steep spiral staircases inside the castle may limit access for some visitors. Admission fees apply, with discounts for concessions and Historic Environment Scotland members. The castle is open daily from 9:30am to 5pm (April to September) and 10am to 4pm (October to March), with last entry 30 minutes before closing.

Recent archaeological excavations have uncovered early outer ward buildings and original entry lines, enhancing understanding of the castle’s development. Preservation work continues to maintain the ruins and ensure visitor safety. The castle remains a vivid symbol of Scotland’s medieval heritage and turbulent history.
