Medieval Origins and Early Purpose

The Old Grammar School began its life between 1154 and 1179 as the Hospital of St John, founded by Prior Lawrence of the Benedictine Monastery of Coventry. This medieval institution served as a sanctuary providing shelter and care for poor and sick wayfarers, with a chapel dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. The hospital was staffed by a warden, priests, and caretakers who maintained both physical relief and spiritual services for those in need. Its sandstone structure, built in the 1340s, included beds for patients and was supported by local benefactors through gifts and endowments.

Transformation into a Grammar School

The Tudor Reformation brought significant change when King Henry VIII dissolved monastic institutions. In 1545, the hospital was surrendered to the Crown and sold to John Hales, a local businessman and royal commissioner, on the condition that a free grammar school be established on the site. By 1557, the school was thriving, using 49 carved oak choir stalls from the former Whitefriars Monastery as desks—these stalls, dating from 1342, still remain and bear the carved graffiti of generations of students. Queen Elizabeth I visited the school in 1565, recognizing its royal foundation and contributing funds for its upkeep.

Architectural Changes and Preservation Challenges

Originally larger, the building underwent several alterations over the centuries. In the early 1800s, part of the structure was demolished to make way for Hales Street. The west front was reconstructed in a Gothic style in the mid-19th century, and the building sustained damage during the 1941 Coventry Blitz air raids. Despite proposals to demolish the structure in the 20th century, public appeals and heritage protections saved it. Repairs were delayed until the 1960s, and a major restoration project led by Culture Coventry began in 2012, culminating in a reopening in 2015 that restored the building’s historical character.

Role in Coventry’s Educational and Cultural Heritage

The Old Grammar School served as the home of King Henry VIII School for over three centuries until 1885, when the school relocated to larger premises. The building then served various community functions, including hosting jumble sales, before falling into disuse. Today, it stands as a cherished landmark adjacent to the Coventry Transport Museum, symbolizing the city’s rich medieval and educational heritage. The preserved choir stalls and historic graffiti offer a tangible connection to the lives of past students and the building’s enduring legacy.
